Captain Marvel—- Oh Carol!

Captain Marvel—- Oh Carol! May 3, 2019

As by now, most of you know, Captain Marvel is the latest hero injected into the Marvel Universe. What you may not know is that before the movie Captain Marvel was even made, the star, Brie Larson (real name Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers) was already in the plot of and filming for Avengers Endgame. She revealed to Stephen Colbert that this was more than a little confusing, as she was not fully sure what she was supposed to be like, since the script of Captain Marvel is an origins story. So a comparison and contrast could be done between Captain Marvel (which she is not called in the Captain Marvel movie) in the one film and in the other.

This film is rather more of a sci fi film than many of the Marvel movies, and Captain Marvel in fact has amnesia and does not fully remember that actually she’s not an alien of the Kree race from outer space. Actually, she’s a human being who acquires super powers in a manner rather similar to the way Spiderman did, in the sense that contact with nuclear or radioactive stuff transforms her from a mere human pilot to….. Captain Marvel. This film also features S.H.I.E.L.D and in particular Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The plot of this movie is rather jumbled rather like Carol’s memories, and it takes a good while to figure out who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. There is also a killer tabby cat in the film, that provides some comic relief (which mostly is lacking in this tale). For my part the film was enjoyable but not epic, and certainly not on a par with the Star Wars movies, even the recent ones. Perhaps future iterations of this story line will be more compelling. The film is just over 2 hours which seems svelte compared to Avengers Endgame. More promising is perhaps the upcoming (in July) Spiderman goes on vacation to Venice film, but we shall see. If you have to choose between Marvel extravaganzas, choose wisely, choose Avengers Endgame.
