I was in seminary in the 70s when the first episode of Star Wars came out…. and it was truly something remarkable. Fresh, fun, with interesting and odd characters and snarky dialogue. This ninth and final episode of the Star Wars has only been 45 years in coming. Talk about a long running story…..So what did I think of this last installment. Well, I enjoyed that J.J. Abrams tried to revisit some of the fun elements and humor of the original three movies. And I genuinely liked the portrayal of Rey, by far the central character in this episode. The ending does bring closure to things, and that is good as well, but as my wife said, even that could have been much better….Overall there was a lot of racing around interstellar space, lots of fighting, and not enough other character development other than Rey, and Ben/Kylo Ren. The movie was long, two hours and 35 minutes, and frankly I did not hear a lot cheers or excitement during the movie in a pretty packed theater. But then this film had a lot to live up to. Of the last three films I’d say the two by Abrams are better than the middle one, and on the whole the first of the three was the best. Is it suitable for older children, raised in the video game era? Yes, I suppose so, but not small children. There’s too much evil and violence on the screen for too long. And noticeably, the soundtrack did not bring us any stellar new John Williams tunes, sadly. I give the movie about a B-.
