Atheism on Trial– Part Nine

Q. Sometimes the big problem is anachronism, asking the wrong and all too modern questions of the Bible. The Bible’s subject matter is history, theology, and ethics, not cosmology, not anthropology, not modern science, and we could go on. Knowing what the Bible actually teaches is where the issue of the truthfulness and trustworthiness of Scripture should be assessed. The Bible touches on many things, like the sun rising and setting, which it does not teach. So I agree that the Bible must be evaluated as a word on target in its original historical context and we need to interpret it in light of that context. As I like to say a text without a context is just a pretext for what you want it to mean. Would you agree?

A. I agree 100%. We must understand not only the language of the text (Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek), but the culture of the text. This is one of the premium ways many of your books have put texts into cultural context.
