Saltzburg is only a little bigger in population than Innsbruck (150,000 compared to about 130,000), but it seems to be a much bigger city as it is more spread out along and above the river, the Salzach. Like many such medieval towns its old city is walled and includes a castle on the acropolis. As the town name suggests, it was a town that made its fortunes originally from a salt mine. Today, it mostly relies on tourism, as it is a favorite place for Americans to come. Why? Because a significant portion of the Sound of Music was filmed here, and also because it is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Now you know why the town is swarming with American tourists, especially in the summer. The setting of the town is spectacular.
The aerial shot shows it’s all along a river, and also up on a hill.
Ah, love locks on a bridge. I’ll bet some of them are more solid than the relationships they represent.
If you are wondering how one gets up to the castle, there is a funicular and also a staircase…
We stayed down below in the lower city as there is plenty to see down below including many churches, and passing cucumber trucks…!
