Into Turkey– Part Forty-One

Into Turkey– Part Forty-One December 29, 2022

Without question,  Cappadocia is one of the most visited regions in all of Turkey, and with good reason.  It is visually stunning due to all the rock formation that are sometimes called fairy castles.  And these rock formations have served as homes for people as far back as we can record history.  Here’s what I’m talking about—- notice not just the cave holes but also in some cases the doors in the cave holes…

These caves and cave homes have come in all sorts of shapes and sizes…

Now all of this becomes of importance for Christians, especially during periods of persecution and before Constantine, but it continued to be important well into the early middle ages where these caves became churches, and monasteries and places where Christian theology could be studied, reflected on, and written down, in the persons of the Cappadocian fathers— the two Gregories and Basil.
