Hattusha– Part Two

Hattusha– Part Two August 2, 2024

The upper city reveals a lot more including some impressive gates.

Here’s first my wife, and then our whole our intrepid band of 12 explorers in the lion gate.

The sphinx gate is certainly interesting, speaking to the interaction between the Hittites and the Egyptians.   The original is in the Ankara museum, but here’s the recreated one.

And did I mention the King’s gate (immediately below).

But when you go through the lion gate and come to the back side of the upper city, you can see how much trouble the Hittites went to, to protect their rear, building a triangular shaped incline hill of rocks and a huge set of challenging stairs.

It would take one brave invader to run up these stairs to try and take the citadel.  In our next post, we will examine the upper wall carvings which are so very famous, and the secret chamber with Luwian hierogliphics.
