Why Steven Ertelt Criticizing Amy Grant Is Wrong

Why Steven Ertelt Criticizing Amy Grant Is Wrong May 11, 2015

Friday on our Free for All Friday edition of Bible News Radio my husband Randall and I discussed the recent controversy with Amy Grant that has been in the news.  If you’re not aware, Amy Grant has partnered with the Gates Foundation, and Steven Ertelt wrote about why he’s upset with Grant for doing so.

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 8.13.58 AM  The main reason Ertelt appears to be upset with Grant is because the Gates Foundation is pro-abortion and he believes that Amy Grant shouldn’t endorse this because of her influence as a Christian and also because Grant is also pro-life and it goes against her own beliefs.

My husband and I discussed this issue and while I completely understand where Ertelt is coming from, ultimately, it’s a hypocritical for Ertelt to criticize Grant for doing what she’s doing.  The reason it’s hypocritical is because Ertelt is no doubt contributing to pro-abortion causes through taxes, through buying products from makers who also endorse Planned Parenthood and other various ways that he has no choice but to give to the abortion industry.

I’ve often stated that if we are to completely boycott everything we oppose that we’d all be standing naked in the desert.   Amy Grant has every right to support causes that she believes in, just as anyone else does.  Amy was bashed by the Christian community years ago when she crossed over from Christian music to secular music and yet her mission was clear – she wanted to reach an audience that wasn’t inside the clubhouse of the church.  She wanted to go where there are people who need Jesus.  I think it’s the same case with her work with the Gates Foundation, and for the sake of argument, even if it’s not, it isn’t Steven Ertelt’s business to play the Holy Spirit and be her conscience.  That is the job of the Holy Spirit, and if Amy feels led to support an organization so that she can spread the gospel and share with people who do not yet understand the gospel, more power to her.
