If you haven’t heard of it yet it’s time you did. 350.org has been showing up all over these days. What is it? Well in their own words it’s an “International effort to raise awareness of the need to decrease carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million.”
Yes, this is an environmentalist movement. I know for some of my readers this is something they really dislike. I’m not one hundred percent sure why, but I think it often comes from a prejudice that being an environmentalist makes someone a Godless liberal (which I’m sure other readers find no problem being). Good or bad this association is not without cause. Often there seems to be a divide between those concerned for the environment and those concerned with the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. This has been changing in recent years, but there still seems to be a divide in many cases. Christian environmentalism can seem in many ways like Christian rock; a lower budget rip off.
350.org is of interest for me spiritually because it is a major national movement headed up by a man of faith. His name is Bill McKibben. Bill is an active methodist who has written both The New Yorker and the Christian Magazine Sojurners. I think he’s on to something, how about you?
Question: How can we have a concern for this world and yet not be conformed to it?
Bill recently was featured on the ever popular Colbert Report
