Giving Your Attention

Giving Your Attention   March 11, 2020

One of the reasons I love working at Hope Clinic is that the work we do is rooted in a Christian Anthropology. We believe that every person who walks through our doors has been created in the image of God, and as such, has an innate dignity. We believe every life is sacred and reflects in some unique way a picture of who God is.

This means that every interaction with another person is an encounter on holy ground.

It is shocking how easily I can sometimes forget this. I am frequently guilty of not giving people my full attention. Too often I let my own concerns and thoughts dictate my attention.

One way we can give space to God in our lives is through making space to God’s image-bearers; other people. Our attention is a precious gift and a limited resource. Are you using it in a way that honors others?

Do you ask people how they are doing and really wait to hear their response?

Do you take the time to hear and remember someone’s name when you meet them?

Do you pray for others regularly and reflect on the real concerns they are experiencing?

Do you take the time to notice the names of the people who serve you while you shop, get gas or run other errands?

These are all practices that can help us develop the discipline of attentiveness.

“Listen, my children, to a parent’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.”

Proverbs 4:1

Questions for Today

  • Can you think of any ways other people have helped show you more of who God is?
  • What’s one way you can practice being more attentive to others?
