A few days ago when it was announced that  Osama Bin Laden had been killed, I, like many others, found myself torn. On one hand, there was great relief that this person, a symbol and perpetrator of destruction and violence had met his demise; and, on the other hand, there was great discomfort with the triumphalist celebrations that were happening all around the country. Facebook and twitter were blowing up with opinions about Bin Laden’s death and the consequent celebrations... Read more

UPDATE – UPDATE – UPDATE – UPDATE ADJUSTING AND ADAPTING: While I had hope to have enough vids to fill the day, it was not too be by our initial deadline of May 22.  While we did get more than 10 towards our goal of 50, a combination of May school activities and a short turnaround made it difficult for folks to get a video together.  With many folks letting us know that they would do it if they had... Read more

I am sure you have seen the billboard/s in your town. The clipart inspired brown signage with words boldly proclaiming”Judgement Day, May 21″ complete with a penitent and praying silhouette, a very cool gold sticker saying that “The Bible Guarantees it” and the broadcast time for the local sponsoring radio station. Now I will admit that I have done little research into this campaign and there is a part of me that is slightly impressed by the marketing campaign that is obviously... Read more

[photo: duvalguillaume] Yep, I'm moving . . . not from one house or city to another, but blogs.  I know, I know, try control your squeals of excitement . . . if you can 😉 Just hear me out. It seems like yesterday that I moved into my starter blog with blogger only to be lured over to typepad in March of 2006.  But alas, with this post  I am leaving www.reyes-chow and moving over the be a featured blogger at... Read more

The story goes a little something like this . . . Once upon a time there was a boy who was driven and compelled by the great wonder and complexity of the world . . . and Jesus. He had many adventures over the years. He  blogged, Twittered, Facebooked and MySpaced a bit back in the day. He has also husbanded, parented, moderated and pastored. He blogged here and here and even more here discovering a love for community and interaction in all of their... Read more

This weekend families in San Francisco will begin receiving school enrollment notifications for the 2011-2012 school year.  We went through this stressful time about nine years ago with our first child as we entered the public school system and are now going through it again as the same child enters the high school process. For those awaiting the letters and emails, this is a pretty stressful time, so I just lift up prayers of perspective and peace for students, families... Read more

Like many people today, I have opinions about a great many things and expertise in few. But, as a person who votes, pays taxes, is a person of faith and happens to have a venue where I can freely express my opinion, I think it’s important to sometimes jump into the fray. I do not pretend to have the organizational answers or legislative prowess that some may have, but, to tell you the truth, that does not seem to matter... Read more

It is hard to believe that today is first day of school.  I have to admit that I wept just a tad as I dropped my “babies” – now 2nd, 4th and 8th grades – off at school this morning.  We are at a wonderful public school here in San Francisco and as we wandered onto the playground, the energy of this place filled my senses with that familiar joy that only a playground full of new beginnings can bring.  Each first day is like... Read more

Yesterday, surrounded by his family, Chuck Chow passed away; a wonderfully peaceful end to a wonderfully full life. My cousin has posted a beautiful post about Grandpa Chow capturing images and words that gives just a glimpse of the this silent, gentle and firm man. As with most grandchildren I only saw glimpses of that young feisty version of Grandpa that we heard about so often.  Still, I revel in memories of stories told and passed along: his time as... Read more

Many of you have NEVER heard me us this benediction in the context of my day-to-day worship leading, but at some events I have been known to get my old-school liturgical groove on  For some worship services, the service is ended with the preacher giving what’s known as the the Charge and Benediction.  I use the following Charge and Benediction because I like it but mostly because it is the only one I have memorized.  This is a compilation of... Read more
