For those of you who lived through the 1960’s or are simply interested in the political climate of that time, you may have heard of Seth Rosenfeld’s new book, Subversives: The FBI’s War on Student Radicals, and Reagan’s Rise to Power where he claims that one of the day’s best known activists and reputed arms supplier to the Black Panthers, Richard Matsui Aoki, was an FBI informant. Not so fast, says Diane C. Fujino, author of Samurai among Panthers: Richard Aoki on Race,... Read more

Short answer: there is none. I recently stumbled upon a Les Miserables inspired video parody  in support of a Barack Obama’s second term. I have obvously shared my support of President Obama in the past, but a lesser-known thing about me is that I loves me some Broadway Musicals: In the Heights, Rent, The Book of Morman and Les Miserables being some of my favorites. President Obama AND Jean Valjean together, yes sir, may I have some more. So not only did I click on over... Read more

It seems that everywhere you look today, “the church,” especially within historic traditions, is talking about reaching that ever-elusive young adult demographic.  Sometimes it feels like we are on some National Geographic safari trying to observe and conserve some rare creature, but all-in-all I think it’s a great endeavor and worth the effort. At the same time, I am also worried that in our excitement about new ministries, creative initiatives and renewed energy focused on young adults that we are doomed even before we... Read more

If you have spent any time on the interwebs over the past month, you have probably seen the words “Pussy Riot” flash across your feed at some point. Oh be still my Puritan heart, I hope my cafe table-mates, can’t see what I’m reading and googling 🙂 In a nutshell from CNN: Three members of Russian female punk rock band Pussy Riot were sentenced to two years in prison Friday after they were found guilty of hooliganism for performing a... Read more

Most people know David as a singer, songwriter, peacemaker, activist and author. And over the past 15+ years, I am grateful to have come to call him a friend, but David’s real mark on my life is as the soundtrack that was played during the birth of all three of my daughters. As refrains of “Hard-Earned Smile, “We’re All Each Other’s Angels” and “S.S. Bathtub” played in the background, David’s voice and music helped welcome my babies into the world.... Read more

Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with lakes, rivers, mountains, rainforests and of course picturesque beaches. I received a warm welcome at the airport in San Juan: 92 degrees with 74% humidity. Despite the hot, humid weather conditions, I went with eagerness to explore the culture, history, and tradition of Puerto Rico and reflect upon theological education in light of Hispanic theology. This beautiful island was home to 70 seminary students for two weeks as they took courses through the... Read more

Like most successful social media platforms, if it isn’t easy to use, it probably won’t make it, but after my Three Reasons You Should Try Instagram post, I figured I shouldn’t direct you into unknown waters without giving a few tips and and practices to help avoid feeling lost. Getting started . . . Getting Started: You have to have a Smart Phone to use Instagram. You can access open your account online, but Instagram is a smart phone only app.... Read more

By now most of you have heard of Instagram. Not only did Facebook buy this fledgling company for a bazzillion dollars, but for many folks it has become the social media platform of choice. The reason that I too have gravitated to Instagram might be that my twitter and facebook feeds are getting more and more difficult to track or that I am more a visual person, but whatever the case, I have found myself thinking Instagram first in my social networking life. I asked some people... Read more

What seems like a million years ago – actually just three years – I was asked to be part of a new blogging group on SFGate, the online presence for the San Francisco Chronicle. The description of this new endeavor, The City Brights Blog, was: We live in an area that has more than its share of luminaries. We’re talking about our public figures, the recognized experts in their fields (from science to the arts), and the local notables that make... Read more

This weekend I dragged my family to a Roller Derby Bout. Now this was not just any bout, this was the Bay Area Derby Girls championship between the San Francisco SheVil Dead and the Richmond Wrecking Belles. I had always wanted to go to one of these, so with a rare free weekend, off we went. It was awesome. It was awesome for all of the reasons that you might imagine: the athleticism and bad-assery of the skaters, the love and... Read more
