When I’m gone…

When I’m gone… August 21, 2012

Here is an interesting test of parenting:  My daughter would like me to learn to do this with her.  This involves her dropping her school work to practice it, and my dropping, well, everything else.  But it is so, so cool.  And also, true to the lyrics, I know that one day my daughter will have a ticket for the long way round, and I am going to miss her when she’s gone.  She won’t always want me to do something with her.  So I am trying to be patient, and engaged, and have fun while I’m at it.  For me, sadly, this is tougher than it should be, but I am so glad that I still have the chance.

Also, if you haven’t seen it, the Odd Life of Timothy Green is breathtaking and I highly recommend it.  The children and I went last night.  I cried through the whole thing, but it made me remember how very, very blessed I am to have them.  A rare movie where you can really say, I am better for having seen that.  I will be thinking about it for years to come.

Very interesting video. If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think I would volunteer to do that with any of my kids 😉 I’d recommend it as an after school project with a sibling or friend. But I would go have a catch or ride bikes or do something active outdoors, so perhaps it is just a preference thing. I get such limited time to “play” with my kids, I’d at least like to sortof enjoy what I am doing! I’d like to see the video when you are finished!

Oh, I didn’t volunteer, but if one of them asked you, would you do it? I didn’t want to say no.

To be honest, I wouldn’t. I’d suggest that they learn to do it themselves with a sibling. I’d then tell myself the reason I have so many kids is so that they can do those sorts of things together. But I might take on a big art project or a sports adventure, so it is probably a preference thing. I’m not at all musically inclined, and performing in any type of show isn’t my thing.

I am very eager to see your video of your own rendition!
