As of today, our church is becoming a one-priest parish. This would be unremarkable, except that St. John Vianney Catholic Church has upwards of 6,500 families, which means more like 14,000 parishioners! Our pastor is clearly concerned about this transition, and spent the entire Sunday Mass homily giving us the facts and figures both in our archdiocese and nationally, as well as pleading with us to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. In an archdiocese of 1.5 million... Read more

Some ladies are said to have “the gift of hospitality”:  Lady Lovely’s home is tidy and tasteful and most of all welcoming, her food and drink fit each occasion, kings and commoners and strangers and friends feel at home with her, she facilitates meaningful and merry conversation, she rarely breaks a sweat (unless it’s from laughter or Scattergories), and her guests leave inspired by their time in her home. I dearly love the Lady Lovelies of my world. And I’m... Read more

We all like to blog from time to time about the cute little things our kids say.  For example, just today, Leo said, and I quote, Monkeys don’t have shirts.  Monkeys’ dads should buy them some shirts. It was pretty funny, though perhaps you had to be there and realize that this came out apropos of nothing.  It was so funny that I put it up on facebook, but nobody but my husband “liked” it, so maybe it wasn’t funny... Read more

Here’s an insightful response to the discussion from Notes on Natural from our very own doc-in-training, friend, and fellow Princeton alum, Queen B: I still remember sitting with our first daughter in Mass a few weeks after she was born.  As the priest raised the host and said, “This is my body, broken for you,” the words took on new meaning for me.  I suddenly realized that, as a new mother having just given birth to my daughter, I understood... Read more

I don’t usually have much interest in gadgets that only have one purpose, but I love fresh cherries, love that my kids love them and their antioxidant power, but HATE watching my family spit pits into napkins, hands or back lawn.  Today I picked up this tool at Wegmans, it was on display next to the cherries, and we took it home to try right away.  It was like a new Montessori work in our household, everyone lined up to... Read more

Thank you to our many wonderful readers who have offered encouragement and support leading up to the delivery of our fourth precious babe.  As Mary Alice reported last week, our little “MG” arrived a week ago today, weighing in at a healthy 7lbs. 14oz. and giving off a lusty cry to proclaim to the world her grand entrance. And “grand” it was.  I won’t go into the long and short of my entire labor experience  (if you’d like to partake,... Read more

From today’s meditation from In Conversation with God: So many people have their own plans for their own wellbeing that only too often they look on God simply as someone who will help them to carry out those same plans. The true state of affairs is quite the opposite. God has his own plans for our happiness, and He is waiting for us to help him accomplish them – and let us be quite clear about it: we cannot improve... Read more
