…for the exhausted Mommy.  I made the mistake of telling the boys yesterday that we would make a treat for today’s Feast of the Holy Cross. But this morning making something like microwave popcorn seemed to require a heroic amount of energy. Thankfully I had exactly 2 store bought tortillas left in the fridge and set up a station for our resident baker with a cookie cutter, melted butter and sugar and cinnamon. After he brushed and sprinkled we popped... Read more

My husband alerted me to this interesting article titled Homeschool Blindspots, by Reb Bradley. It has great thoughts on raising Christian kids whether or not you homeschool. …is that the dryer repair is so expensive, we don’t have to have a conversation about whether to replace it. …is that the contents of our basement are so moldy, our insurance is going to cover everything …is that I learned today that I can spend most of the day on the phone and with service people and my children won’t tear the house down, and I was competent enough to take notes, pay attention and get the job done... Read more

The other night, Mr. Red and I were talking about his opinions on children’s books.  We compiled this brief list of his favorites for your enjoyment.  The commentary is Mr. Red’s.  If you’re husband doesn’t normally like to read to the kids, maybe he’ll like these …. Mr. Red’s favorites: Fin McCoul by Tomie dePaola – Irish folklore, violence, and the defeat of the brutish Cucullin.  This book is best when read out loud with a thick Irish accent.  As... Read more

Last night, as I was looking at my household chore chart, I realized that it has been over a month since I have washed the children’s sheets. “Yuck,” I thought. And then I realized that this means that the children have not had an accident or a leaky diaper in over a month, and I thought, “Great!” Looking on the bright side at its best 🙂 My sister’s 1st-grade teacher taught her a song called “Stay on the Sunny Side,”... Read more

The priest this morning gave a beautiful homily in honor of the memorial of September 11th, 2001. Amongst other things, he directed us to the question of why we aim to seek God in all circumstances, and how we can do this. He recalled the days surrounding 9/11/01 – the images of mothers running with their children, firemen covered in ashes from head to foot, the towers crumbling to the ground before our eyes. He reminded us of the bravery... Read more

Dear Readers, About a month ago, the Builders were asked to write a review of Thomas Groome’s latest book entitled “Will There Be Faith: A New Vision for Educating and Growing Disciples.” I decided that I was up to the task, and received a free copy of Groome’s book from the publisher. I have read the book and compiled my thoughts into a book review below – enjoy! I have just finished reading Thomas Groome’s newest book, Will There Be... Read more

Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation for my many sins; to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my inclinations; to work with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop, by means of labor, the gifts received from God; work with order, peace, moderation and patience, without ever recoiling before weariness or difficulties; to... Read more
