So, my older children had their bi-annual dentist cleanings yesterday afternoon, and the dentist found two (!) in-between-the-teeth cavities in my 7 year-old son. Apparently I am supposed to be flossing my son’s teeth – somehow I missed this, which makes me feel quite negligent, although I don’t remember flossing MY teeth at the age of 7 and I never had these problems! In any case, my son also had a regular cavity in his molar a couple of years... Read more

Well, many of you heard it first here, that Father Tom has been given a new job in the diocese and will finish up as Princeton chaplain on July 1.  Last weekend we attended his last “regular” 4:30 Mass in the chapel.  There will be daily mass and Baccalaureate, but generally speaking, his term is coming to a close. Does anyone still have the rosary beads he gave you at Baccalaureate?  I was thinking of those beads when I watched... Read more

Thanks for all of your advice so far.  I think that I need a to-do list, or several, and Mr. MA and I have agreed to spend some time making one, which will help us see where we are going and what is required of us.  One of the lists is going to be a monthly, recurring list, the home maintenance stuff that we can count on having to do each month or season.  Then, we will make our special... Read more

We are in maintenance mode, it is one of those rare times in the life of a young family when mom is not pregnant or nursing, no child is ill or in a state of emotional crisis, there are no moves or career changes being contemplated.  We are just living our real, day to day life.  Let me tell ya, it is great, there are date nights and casual entertaining and some minor redecorating going on, but here in grown... Read more

An acquaintance who is Catholic, married in the church and has asked me for advice about catholic schools and ccd for her children, recently mentioned in a casual conversation that she is considering getting her tubes tied.  I stammered a bit and said, oh, don’t do that, it’s so permanent, but afterwards I felt unsure as to whether I should have said more about the moral problems with sterilization.  On the one hand, it is sort of inappropriate to get... Read more

It’s been a while since I’ve been pregnant, 20 months to be exact.  I’ve run a 1/2 marathon, I’m generally fit, and I’m happily my “regular” weight, if there is such a thing.  While I am tall and thin, I’ve never had the most flattering mid-section, and after delivering 5 babies, I don’t expect to get many compliments on my abs.  But not getting a compliment and brushing off an insult are two very different things. On Easter Sunday I... Read more

Here’s a look at an article relating the findings of a new study on the pill and it’s disruption of the normal cyclic attractions and interactions between men and women. An excerpt: “The type of man a woman is drawn to is known to change during her monthly cycle—when a woman is fertile, for instance, she might look for a man with more masculine features. Taking the pill or another type of hormonal contraceptive upends this natural dynamic, making less-masculine... Read more

In our community, as Holy Week approached, it was common to chat about where one plans to celebrate.  Families bounce around from one parish to another, trying to find the “least hokey” version of the Easter Triduum.  This is a sad state of affairs, during the deepest, most profound and beautiful days of the Catholic year. Then I saw Red’s first communion pictures, which included a modestly dressed little girl and a priest in outstandingly beautiful vestments.  I remember that... Read more

A beautiful day, a beautiful girl, and a beautiful Church.  Thank you Jesus!  Today, on Mother’s Day, I am humbled and overwhelmed for the great gift of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and I am so thankful that my daughter is now able to receive this gift.  Happy Mother’s Day to all, and a huge Congratulations to Gianna! Read more
