Bernard Nathanson, the man who was once a staunch atheist and pro-abortion activist and became, by the grace of God, a strong pro-life advocate and eventually a faithful Catholic, died yesterday at the age of 84. His story is quite remarkable; you can read a Zenit article here, and even the Wall Street journal had a nice column on Mr. Nathanson here. Praise God for the gift of Bernard Nathanson’s conversion, and for his courage and humility! Read more
I’m sitting here this morning with my almost 7 year-old son, Christopher – he is home because of the Presidents’ Day holiday, which is nice for all of us! Just for fun, I thought I would ask him what I should write to a group of Catholic mothers. Here is what he suggested that I tell you: “God is with us. Do not be afraid. God is one of the only perfect people – the other one is Mary. Also... Read more
One of my very favorite two-day segments of each year is right now, in mid-February, when all our W-2 and 1099 forms are in. For two nights, I get to put the kids to bed, spread our documents across the living room, fire up TurboTax and do our taxes. Yes, part of the appeal is that, as a graduate student family with three children, we pay little tax up front but still manage to qualify for a refund that’s about... Read more
What am I cooking? Tilapia fish tacos is on the menu for tonight. Awhile back I found a great recipe for easy tilapia dredged in panko breadcrumbs. Delicious! The kids loved it, which was quite a feat for us. They also love tacos, so tonight we’re combining the two! Pray for us (me)! 🙂 What am I reading? When life gets demanding, I confess personal reading goes out the window, save for a few precious moments perusing Real Simple. On... Read more
Redbook posted an excellent article today on the sexualization of young girls. I wholeheartedly agree with the author’s sentiments, barring a few miscues stemming from her clearly secular mindset. Here’s a sample– [G]irlhood really is different today: more commercialized (companies spent $100 million in advertising to kids in 1983; today they spend almost $17 billion), more girly (nearly everything manufactured for girls — from birth — is screamingly, irritatingly, blindingly pink), and increasingly sexualized. You may balk — what’s sexy... Read more
Good Tuesday morning, dear friends! Over the past week or so, I have been reflecting on the feeling of anger that we, as parents, can so often feel towards our children. Perhaps we feel angry when they repeatedly disobey our instructions, forget their simple chores, act uncharitably towards their siblings, or make a big mess when we’ve just cleaned the house. All of these scenarios are frustrating, and because we are human we are often prone to feelings of anger.... Read more
Not to add to anyone’s homemaking stress level, but nothing says Happy St. Valentine’s Day more than a silky, rich, chocolate pots de creme.(Keep in mind I had a gourmet cook for a mother…this was her go-to dessert. Pots de creme pots were high priority essentials on my wedding registry list.) If you are like me and add cream to your coffee, you will have all the ingredients! Pots de Creme au Chocolate 2 oz bittersweet chocolate (I use semi... Read more
…When you’re only a year old! Our baby is turning “1” next week, and I really do feel as if the past year has flown by! I’m pretty sure that I have become more sentimental with each child, perhaps because I now know how quickly babies turn into toddlers, and toddlers into preschoolers, and then they’re in elementary school and we call them “big kids,” and life changes forever. So, because I can’t help myself, here is our sweet Caroline... Read more
