After spending this week in Edinburgh, Scotland in a dumpy Travelodge room passing around a horrendous stomach virus with my kids while my husband goes to the National Archives, I have been thinking that we should start a merit badge system for moms. My brother is an Eagle Scout; here are some badge categories for all you Eagle Moms.  1. Medic: for singlehandedly taking care of vomiting children and controlling destructive toddlers while our own innards are being thrashed 2.... Read more

What am I cooking? Lots of baked goods! Cupcakes galore for our school’s annual carnival on Saturday, triple chocolate brownies for our family and neighbors :), and these pretzel monsters as a fun after-school activity with the kids. I’m also making something with chicken in the slow-cooker so that we can eat some real food tonight – any suggestions? I have lots of slow-cooker recipes using beef, but not many with chicken… What am I reading? Lots of cookbooks and... Read more

It is at this hour of the day when I am on fumes…   Thus, when a mom wants to avoid a messy kitchen, why not write about said messy kitchen?! If you were to teleport yourselves to my home at the moment, you would find atmospheric stillness–the kids are at rest, but in their wake, the wake of a long day of fun and play, you’d find tumult.  The kitchen has a frantic feel to it, a not-so-distant memory... Read more

One of the most recent blessings in our family has been the addition of a new parenting philosophy for mom and dad, “Parenting with Love & Logic“. Having read some of the Love and Logic books for early childhood, I was intrigued when I saw that our church would be offering a Parenting with L&L class this Fall. I remembered vaguely some of the techniques that I had read about and tried when our oldest was a toddler – quite... Read more

Is it me or am I the only one out there who struggles with the change of seasons and the effect it has on my children’s wardrobes? As I type, there are bins stacked in the center of every bedroom; clothes strewn about in various piles on the floor; children looking at me each morning, wondering what they will wear and from which drawer they will find it.  It seems our home is in a general state of disarray like this... Read more

We have been pretty successful so far in getting dinner on the table even with our busy fall school and activity schedule.  Planning helps a lot, so I was intrigued by this video about how a Texas mother plans a whole years menu all at once.  My planning method is similar in that I have made a list of meat dishes, sides and veggies and then I pick and choose for about a week at a time, I could maybe... Read more

And a Happy Belated Feast of St. Francis to all our readers!  Yesterday we were too busy celebrating Claire’s first birthday to write about it.  The day began with 3 older siblings bouncing into baby Claire’s room singing happy birthday, and ended with tummies full of cake.  Lots of family, lots of love, and lots of good memories.   Happy Birthday baby Claire, we can’t believe you are 1! Read more
