Blessed are you, Mary
The ancient poet Jacob of Sarug, known as “the flute of the Holy Spirit,” focuses on the intimacy of mother and Son, and the fruits of that intimacy in our lives.
Blessed are you, Mary, and blessed is your holy soul,
for your blessedness is beyond that of all the blessed.
Blessed are you who have borne, held in your arms, and kissed as an Infant
the One who upholds the ages in secret with his word.
Blessed are you, from whom the Savior has appeared on this earth of exile,
overcoming the tempter and bringing peace to the world.
Blessed are you, whose pure mouth touched the lips
of the One whom the seraphim dare not look upon in his radiance.
Blessed are you, who have fed with your pure milk the Source of light and life for all the living.
Blessed are you, because the whole universe rings on the day of your memorial,
and angels and men celebrate your festival.
Daughter of the poor, you became the mother of the King of kings. You gave to this poor world the riches that can make it alive.
You are the ship that is filled with the goodness and the treasures of the Father,
who sent his riches once more into our empty home.
—Jabob of Sarug
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
What spiritual riches in my life have come to me through Mary? What “trea- sures of the Father” has she brought in to the “empty home” of my soul?
CLOSING PRAYER
From a prayer of St. Bernard of Clairvaux: You are that chosen Lady in whom our Lord found repose, and in whom he has deposited all his treasures without measure. So the whole world, my most holy Lady, honors your chaste womb as the temple of God, in which the salvation of the world began.
