Satan is more guilty than we are; Angels: Day 105

Satan is more guilty than we are; Angels: Day 105 November 3, 2016

angels_gregory_the_great_1Satan, says St. Gregory the Great, left his exalted position by his own wickedness, whereas we were persuaded by Satan to sin. Of the two, therefore, Satan is the more guilty, which is why we have the chance to be redeemed and he does not.

“May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it” ( Job 3:4).

There is another way in which it was both appropriate that humanity should be recovered when lost, and impossible for the spirit that elevated himself to be recovered. The angel fell by his own wickedness, but humanity fell by the wicked- ness of another.

We are brought to the light of repentance by the coming of the Redeemer, but the fallen angel is not brought back to the light of a restored position by any hope of pardon; he does not change his ways and convert. Therefore it is very appropriate to say, “May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it.” In other words, “Since he has brought on the darkness himself, let him suffer what he him- self has made eternally. And let him never recover the light of his former state, since he left it without even being persuaded to do so.” –St. Gregory the Great, Moralia in Job, 4.8

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
God condemned Satan right away, but offers me a once-in-a-lifetime chance at redemption. Am I doing everything I can to take him up on his offer?

CLOSING PRAYER
Guardian Angel, guide me to true repentance, so that I may not stray into the way of the fallen angels.
