Satan presents himself before the Lord; Angels: Day 115 November 13, 2016

angels_gregory_the_great_4Satan still has an angel’s nature, says St. Gregory the Great. Although hhas fallen, he is still rightly classed with the angels in the Book of Job.

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them” ( Job 1:6).

It is certainly necessary to ask how Satan came to be there among the elect angels, when long before he had been condemned and banished from among them—which is what his pride made necessary.

But he is well said to have been among them. Though he had lost his blessed state, he still had a nature like theirs. Though his demerits sink him down, he is still lifted up by the attributes of his subtle nature.

So it says he came before the Lord among the “sons of God,” because the eye of Almighty God looks on everything spiritual and sees that Satan also has a more subtle nature—as Scripture tells us: “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Prov. 15:3). –St. Gregory the Great,  Moralia in Job, 2.4

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Knowing that “the eyes of God are in every place,” are God’s eyes on me to protect me, or to protect others from me?

CLOSING PRAYER

Guardian Angel, protect me from temptation, so that I may find mercy and grace with all the saints that have been pleasing to you since the world began.
