Peace comes from being regulated by God; Angels: Day 265

angels_gregory_the_great_1God creates everything so that it all works together when it follows his will, says St. Gregory the Great. Whenever his creations resist him, they lose that peace, because it is only possible  when things are regulated by God. Satan’s punishment comes from going against his own nature.

God, who creates all things marvelously, regulates them himself so that, after they have been created, they agree with themselves. Whenever any resistance is made to the Creator, that agreement in peace is broken up, because things can never be well regulated when they lose the management of regulation from above. Things that would still have been at peace if they were subject to God make con- fusion by their own act when they are left to themselves, because, when they fight against the Creator, they do not find in themselves that peace that comes from above.

Thus the highest angelic spirit, who might have stood at the height if he had been subject to God, has been banished, and now has to bear the burden of himself. He roams uncomfortable in his own nature. In the same way, the first parent of the human race, because he went against the Creator’s command, was immediately exposed to the insolence of the flesh. He was laid low beneath him- self; because he would not be subject to his Maker in obedience, he even lost the peace of the body.

Thus it is well said, “who hath resisted him, and hath had peace?” ( Job 9:4). –St. Gregory the Great,  Moralia in Job, 9.5

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Is my own nature, like Satan’s, making me uncomfortable in some way that shows me I’m not in tune with God’s will?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, tune my nature to your will, and teach me to be as humble before your power as the glorious angels in Heaven are.
