God’s perfect knowledge is something no human could teach us, says St. Augustine. Angels couldn’t teach it to us; they couldn’t even teach it to other angels. But we can have it if we knock at God’s door.
We see the things you have made because they exist. But they exist be- cause you made them. And we see from outside that they exist, and from inside that they are good; but you saw them where you made them when they were made.
We were moved to do good after our hearts had conceived of your Spirit; but before that, forsaking you, we were moved to do evil. But you, the One, the good God, have never stopped doing good.
We also have certain good works, ours by your good gift, but not eternal; and after them we hope to rest in your great hallowing. But you are the Good, and have no need of good; you are always at rest, because you yourself are your rest.
How could a human being teach another to understand this? Or how could an angel teach an angel? Or how could an angel teach a human being? Let it be asked of you, sought in you, knocked for at your door. Then it will be received, it will be found, it will be opened. –St. Augustine, Confessions, 13.38
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
How do I seek the knowledge even angels can’t teach? Do I read Scripture, listen attentively at Mass, or study God’s creation?
CLOSING PRAYER
Holy Guardian Angel, I know that there is knowledge you cannot teach me; but lead me to the door where I can receive it as you do.
