In Rethinking Incarceration, Dominique Dubois Gilliard illustrates the unfortunate, intentionally overlooked and shameful history of the United States transitioning out of the era of slavery and into the re-enslavement of Black Americans through the justice system. Compounding this difficult history into the present reality, Gilliard brilliantly penned a theological awakening for Christ’s followers to rethink how we understand neighbor.
“Thus, the same racialization that appraised blacks as subhuman during slavery now criminalized blackness after the Thirteenth Amendment and led to blacks being legally re-enslaved,” wrote Gilliard. “Yet again, the law made it permissible for elite whites vested in a depraved system to get filthy rich off the blood, sweat and dehumanization of subjugated blacks.”
We sat down with the activist, speaker, pastor and author about his new book, as well as his work of racial righteousness and reconciliation for Love Mercy Do Justice.
