Biblical Judgment: What Could it Look Like For the United States?

We are living in perilous times with the present American economy but there is also crime, violence, regular abortions and more.  What would a biblical judgment on the U.S. look like?  How could we tell if God is going to judge America or if He already is?

God is Judge Over All Nations

The Bible is clear that God is the Judge of all nations but just because He hasn’t judged a nation doesn’t mean that He won’t.   Clearly, God is over all the earth and this includes all nations as Psalm 82:9 says “O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!” Eventually “He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth” (Psalm 110:6).  When compared to God, the nations are not only nothing, but they are less than nothing as Isaiah the prophet wrote “All the nations are as nothing before him, they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness” (40:17).

When genocide occurs without a second thought then God puts that nation under His judgment because God is the Author of Life and only He has the right to take human life.  Where is this genocide taking place in America?  Every single year there are about one million abortions in this country.  Since Roe v Wade became law, almost fifty seven million babies have died in their mother’s womb. In what used to be the safest place on earth has now become one of the deadliest.  Do we really believe that God will look the other way when this genocide taking place in America goes on year after year?  The answer seems obvious…no, He will not.

Is the United States already experiencing God’s judgement?

Reasons God Judges Nations

We have already seen that God abhors violence and so we know that abortion will bring God’s judgment upon a nation but what are some of the other things that happen where God will surely judge a nation?  Isaiah 2:6-12 clearly reveals what constitutes reasonable grounds for God bringing judgment on a nation:

“For you have rejected your people, the house of Jacob, because they are full of things from the east and of fortune-tellers like the Philistines… Their land is filled with silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures… their land is filled with horses, and there is no end to their chariots… Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands… The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled… For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low.”

Notice that the land is full of horses and chariots which today might be cars and truck.  The land is full of fortune-tellers today which are an abomination to God. They have their own idols and these idols might not be carved images but they are idols nonetheless.  These idols might be money, positions of power, family, status, music, Hollywood, the Internet, and most of all, our own selves.  These nations that God judges are also full of people who are full of pride and instead of humbling themselves, they are proud and lofty.  Does this nation sound familiar?  God has promised to judge nations such as these.

What did God do to these nations that did such things?  He “scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them” (Exodus 36:19).  Could this happen to America?  Yes!  It might be a financial captivity because the U.S. is already in such heavy indebtedness to other nations that we are really “slave to the borrower” (Prov 22:7). This judgment could be where “people will die of the plague or perish by famine [and/or] fall by the sword [and be] scatter[ed] to the winds and [be] pursue[d] with drawn sword” (Ezekiel 5:12) and He may “hand them over to their enemies” (Ezekiel 39:23).

Signs that God is Judging a Nation

The things that happened just prior to a nation that fell were things like, but not limited to, sexual immorality. This sexual immorality included homosexual activities that spelled doom for Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 13:13), where the value of life, even the young, are deemed as expendable like through abortion.  It may come where there is rampant greed and corruption that fill the land and the rich take the poor for spoils or take advantage of them (Habakkuk 2:6-8) or where divination or fortune telling is the norm (Isaiah 2:6).  God judges those nations where the poor and fatherless are taken advantage of and violence fills the streets (Jer 5:26-29).  Does this sound like the U.S. today?

Here is God’s warning to this and any nation where these things are already happening and where they refuse to repent.  Jeremiah the weeping prophet probably wrote this in tears, “For wicked men are found among my people; they lurk like fowlers lying in wait. They set a trap; they catch men. Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great and rich; they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy. Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord, and shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this” (5:26-29)? God is asking in the last sentence a rhetorical question, meaning that it is sure to come, “shall I not avenge myself on a nation such as this?”  The answer is yes.

Conclusion

There is still time for America to repent and to return to God.  The signs are everywhere that the U.S. is under the judgment of God but I pray that it’s not too late.  Even if it is too late, we can turn to God individually and repent, confess our sins, humble ourselves, and trust in the Savior.  We know that God is no respecter of persons Acts (10:34-35) any more than He is a respecter of nations, for to Him the nations are less than nothing (Isaiah 40:17).  The signs are everywhere, so if you are a believer, warn your family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers that this nation is in trouble.  We are in so deep that it would take a miracle to get us out of it.  God is still in the business of doing miracles but He will do no miracle in this nation unless they first believe in Him and turn back to the Creator.  We must do this before it’s too late because the signs are everywhere that the U.S. is already under the judgment of God.
