We live in the age of playlists, from music for the gym to inspirational songs that help with creativity. The same holds true for Christians in regards to worship songs. It certainly helps to have a set list of songs that you can always turn to when you need to focus on the Lord, help with your devotional time, or just de-stress with some God-centered music after a long day or week. With that being said, here are 7 great worship songs that you can add to your playlist. If you don’t have a playlist yet, these 7 songs are a great start!
Amazing Grace
A very old hymn, originally written by John Newton, but adapted to fit modern worship styles by Christian artists worldwide, such as Chris Tomlin. This song has an incredible message within it, which as you can guess is all about God’s grace! It is arguably one of the most well-known and listened to hymn of all time. The lyrics that most people would recognize are: “Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” Search around for some versions that you like more, as there are hundreds out there! One of the most popular, right now, is the Chris Tomlin one.
Only King Forever – Elevation Worship
Elevation Worship has become very popular in the Christian music scene. They have been around for a handful of years now, but they are certainly gaining more steam nowadays. Many of their songs are upbeat and catchy, but pack a wonderful message. “Only King Forever,” asserts that Jesus is the only King that Christians serve and He alone is victorious in all things. As the song states, he is “our firm foundation.” Without Jesus, our faith crumbles. It’s a great song when you just want to focus on Jesus and be a little upbeat while doing it!
This I believe – Hillsong Worship
You’ve probably heard of Hillsong Worship (if not, where have you been?!). I don’t normally like trendy worship bands and all, but I must admit that they do some great things. In “This I believe,” they have a way of making beautiful music and doctrine fit together. The song proclaims that we believe in the resurrection, that the trinity is real, and that Jesus Christ is Lord of our lives.
I Surrender All – Ascend the Hill
This hymn has been redone a million different times, just like Amazing Grace. There are older versions available, but recently I have been listening to Ascend the Hill’s version. They certainly updated it and made it modern, so if you like the contemporary feel, then this version is certainly for you. If not, go ahead and type it into Spotify or Pandora and you’ll be sure to get hundreds of other artists who have covered the song (from Casting Crowns to Reuben Studdard!).
It is Well (Oh My Soul) – Brandon Heath
Once again, this hymn has many different versions available. A great and contemporary one, however, is Brandon Heath’s version on the “Jesus Firm Foundation: Hymns of Worship” album, featuring artists like Matthew West, Newsboys, Kari Jobe, Casting Crowns, Michael W. Smith, and Brandon Heath. Although Heath makes the hymn more modern, it’s certainly not over the top and it’s largely acoustic.
Your Love is Strong – Jon Foreman
Jon Foreman, the front man for the popular band Switchfoot, admits that he was never good at writing worship songs. It’s not his gifting, so he doesn’t produce things just for the sake of doing it. However, he gave listeners a song that is borderline worship music on one of his side solo projects. Granted, not everyone will consider this a worship song—and that’s fine! However, the song is quite beautiful and definitely brings glory to God. Listen to yourself and leave a comment below on whether or not you count it as a worship song!
From the Inside Out
A great song with amazing lyrics, teaching us to love the Lord from the inside out. It’s a needful message for the church today! The song can be found in countless versions, so all that’s needed is a little searching and many will start popping up. Chances are, you’ve heard this one on a Christian radio station, too!
Conclusion
