Top 7 Bible Verses To Help You Feel Closer To God October 7, 2015

Contrary to popular opinion, Christianity is not about emotions or feeling close to God. Do you experience emotions? Definitely! Do you, at times, feel close to God? Sure! However, the Christian faith is not grounded in these subjective feelings; rather, it’s grounded in the Word of God and who Jesus Christ is. Some Christians rely too heavily on their experiences and feelings, instead of relying on the Scriptures and what God says. It’s certainly unfortunate, but it’s something that everyone can be cautious of from now on. Suffice it to say, though, there are times in our lives where it’s good to be encouraged by the Bible and sometimes the best places to go are passages that speak about being close to God. Here are the top 7 Bible verses to help you feel closer to God.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” Hebrews 4:8 NKJV

This verse makes a bold statement; if we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. God isn’t going to do everything for you. Just like in a strong romantic relationship, both parties must be willing to join together in fellowship, spend quality time with one another, and be willing to communicate. The same holds true in the relationship between God and man. He is always willing and able, but we must do our part and start drawing near.

“Blessed is the man You choose, and cause to approach You, that he may dwell in Your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your Holy Temple.” Psalm 65:4

Those who are close to the Lord will definitely be satisfied. Ultimately, Jesus brings all that are His ultimate satisfaction.

“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” Psalm 145:18

Bible Verses To Grow Closer To God

This is certainly a wonderful promise. Jesus will be near to anyone who calls on Him!

“If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” 2 Timothy 2:13

Even in times when we are completely unfaithful to God, He does not change—He will always remain Faithful because it is a part of who He is.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand” John 10:27-28

Those who call Jesus their Lord will recognize His voice and He will always protect them. This does not mean their life will be without calamity, but it does mean they will have a shepherd who is always their to care for their soul!

“Then he said to them all, ‘if anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up the cross daily, and follow Me.” Luke 9:23 NKJV

Getting closer to God requires action on our part. In this passage, we learn that we must die to our flesh in order to live for God. We cannot serve more than one master, and we must choose wisely. It’s not any easy thing to do, but if we truly want to be close to Jesus, picking up our cross is a necessity.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 NKJV

Sometimes we don’t feel close to God because there are roadblocks in our way. This is not saying that every time you feel down or feel far away from God that there is some sin in your life, but at the very least it’s important to ask the question and to fully examine ourselves.

Conclusion

In my years of working at a church, volunteering in student ministries, and just being a part of a church community, I’ve witnessed that the majority of people who claim they are not feeling close to God are the same people who are either not trying to change it or are off doing sinful things. Again, that is a generalization and based on my personal experience and observation. But, I feel it is important enough for me to point out. If you’re feeling far away from God, be sure to examine yourself and truly ask God to search your heart and see if there is anything in it that should not be there. And, don’t sit idly by while you feel this way—constantly pray and search for answers!
