Is The Big Bang Theory Biblical? December 28, 2015

Does the Big Bang Theory fit with the biblical account of creation?

What is the Big Bang?

The Big Bang Theory holds to the idea that the rapid expansion of matter started from a single point of a state of an extremely high density and high temperature core, which according to the current cosmological theories, marked the origin of the universe. This theory accounts for the model of the universe beginning and then expanding outwardly into empty space. If you could wind back the universe, you would see that it would all rewind back to a singular starting point in time and space where all matter that exists was at one time in one place. Today we know that the universe is expanding outwardly at an ever-increasing pace so what is expanding must have had a beginning place or point in space from which it must have expanded from and this must have had a starting point. It all came from an extremely dense and hot state and as I wrote, it continues to expand today with ever-greater speed. The expanding universe might be traced back in time to an originating single point as scientists have built on the idea of cosmic expansion. Genesis 1:1 also gives a beginning or starting point for the universe as it says “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1) so is the biblical account of creation compatible with the Big Bang Theory?

Cause and Effect

Does not the universe, and in fact, all matter infer a beginning? Doesn’t the Law of Causality demand that whatever begins to exist or exists now must have had a cause equal to or greater than itself? It seems ludicrous to believe that the universe sprang from nothing apart from an uncaused First Cause since from nothing, nothing comes. Where did all matter come from unless it was caused to come into existence? Can it really be true what the late Carl Sagan once said, that anywhere from 10 to 15 billion years ago the universe exploded into being? What was it before it “exploded into being?” How can non-being explode into being? Wouldn’t it have had to exist prior to “being?” Does not an effect demand a cause?

Gaps in the Theory

There are gaps in the Big Bang Theory because as those evolutionists who hold to Big Bang cosmology know that the Big Bang itself does not entail biological evolution and it does not explain the origin of biological life on earth as does the Book of Genesis. If at one time there was absolutely nothing that existed, then nothing would exist today, since out of nothing, comes nothing, therefore something, or really Someone, had to have existed before the finite, singularity of the Big Bang event. Professor Edgar Andrews of Oxford University said that the universe, including all physical matter, represents a highly improbable arrangement of matter and energy, an extremely improbable arrangement by time and chance since the laws of fundamental constants of nature give every appearance of being fine-tuned to permit the existence of intelligence life on earth (known as the Anthropic Principle). C.S. Lewis said that there is no philosophical theory which I have yet come across that is a radical improvement on the words of Genesis, that ‘In the beginning God created heaven and earth” so claiming that science rules this out is ignorance masquerading as intelligence.

General Revelation

God actually reveals Himself in His creation as the psalmist wrote “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1) but people “deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water” (2 Pet 3:5). Paul said it is obvious to them as he wrote that “what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Rom 1:19-20). What God has revealed from heaven is made plain for all to see but they willingly and intentionally suppress that truth (Rom 1:18) because they love their sin and will deny God at any cost; even at the cost of irrationality.  No excuses!

Conclusion

Whether you believe in the Big Bang Theory is not important at all. What is important is that the Creator is coming again and will judge the world in righteousness and that you must believe in Him to receive eternal life (John 3:16). The Prophet Daniel was told of this coming Judgment Day long ago in writing that “at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever” (Dan 12:1b-3). I don’t care if you don’t believe in the Big Bang Theory or not; I do care that you believe in the Son of God Who Himself declares that “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36).
