Is there any evidence that God is a man-made idea or creation?

Who Created God?

The argument that if God created everything, then who created God has many fallacies to which Professor Edgar Andrews (Professor Emeritus of the University of London) addressed in his book “Who Made God?” The atheist might say that evolution made us but then we could ask “Who made evolution?” with the answer being “everything around us,” to which we could then ask, “Who made everything around us” (p. 18) so Professor Andrews uses the example that Beethoven was greater than his composition or a baker can make a cake but then the cake is eaten and then gone, and ceases to exist but the baker is greater than the cake and he or she continues to exist, thus, the baker is greater than their creation, the cake. No one would have to explain why the baker continues to exist or who created the baker. If non-believers demand the necessity of God having a creator then we are assuming that there is no spiritual or non-physical realm, which is impossible to prove (p. 25). Professor Andrews concludes that “Science can describe the fundamental structures of matter, energy, space, and time but can hardly be said to explain them” (p. 27).

Mankind’s God’s

The history of humanity is a history of idol worship, creature worship (Rom 1:22-25), and even king or emperor worship but just because many cultures around the world have come up with their own false gods doesn’t mean that the One True God does not exist. As with anything, discovering something that’s false does not mean that the true does not exist. John Calvin rightly said the human heart is an idol factory (John Calvin, Institutes, 1.11.8) and a look at history proves this is so but John Calvin meant that our hearts desire to create gods that we can understand and put in a box but sometimes the idols of our hearts are pet sins and covetous desires like money which is probably the most prolific idol or god in the human heart. Everything has a beginning and we know that the universe had a beginning point; therefore the universe has a cause. It is illogical to believe something could begin to exist without a cause since therefore God has no beginning in time, He has always existed, so doesn’t need a cause. The Bible says unbelievers have no excuse at all “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom 1:20).

God’s Preexistence

If anything exists today, then there must have been something or someone who existed before. If there was nothing at any time that did not exist then nothing would exist right now because of the law of causality or cause and effect or sometimes called the “law of causality” which even in nature demands that every change in nature is produced from some cause however God is set apart from His creation and is not part of it because He is uncaused. If a baker baked a cake, the baker must have existed prior to the baking of that cake. The baker is not part of his creation, the cake; rather he or she is above it and existed prior to that and will exist long after the cake’s eaten but the point is, the cake demands that there must have been a baker just as a painting necessitates the need for a painter. So it is with the creation; the creation must have had a Creator but is there evidence that God made man?

God Made Man

The Bible states that, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1) and since mankind is part of the creation, logic tells us that God must have created mankind since he is part of the heavens and the earth. The beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the creatures in the sea are nothing like mankind because God created man in the very image of God (Gen 1:27). For Christians, that is enough evidence. One difference between mankind and the creatures is that “Humans constantly invoke unobservable phenomena and variables to explain why certain things are happening. Chimps operate in the world of concrete, tangible things that can be seen. The content of their minds is about the observable world.” [1.] Being made in the image of God refers to the characteristics of the human spirit and the ability to make moral judgments which are things not found in any other animal species. Human’s plan, prepare, ponder, contemplate, think about death, have guilt, have a sense of justice, and so many other attributes that are not found in the creatures of the earth. God made man. You either believe that or you are willfully suppressing that fact (Rom 1:18).

Conclusion

Only a fool believes that God does not exist (Psalm 14:1) since “what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (Rom 1:18-19) and even though “they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things” (Rom 1:21-23).
