PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — It’s no secret that people in Portland love beer.

With that in mind, a local church has started mixing hops — with hymns.

Every month, First Christian Church in downtown Portland holds a gathering to sing songs, praise God and drink local beer. On this Saturday night the church added a twist for Christmas — injecting Handel’s “Messiah” into the equation.

Organizers said while some may balk at the idea, Jesus would not have a problem with serving alcohol.

“I say, ‘Why not? Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine at the wedding,'” said Senior Pastor Amy Piatt. “And church has to think outside of the box.”

Organizers called the event family friendly, saying they keep things under control with a two-drink limit. The church is at 1314 SW Park Ave. in Portland.
