A Memoir of Sledding

A Memoir of Sledding

There on the hill are the little children

Clad in thick gloves and woolen hats

Puffy suits to keep out snow

Undershirts, knit socks, and long underwear

And massive clunky boots

There on the hill are the little children

Tugging their sleds

Made of brightly-colored plastic and unfinished wood

Some with shiny metal runners

Some long enough to hold them all

There on the hill are the little children

Racing to the bottom

Swiftly dashing through the snow

Shouting and screaming with glee

Tumbling giddily as they hit a drift

There on the hill are the little children

Smiling at their silly game

Wind-burnt, laughing faces

Watching the glistening sun give way to night

Trudging home to eat their suppers

There on the hill are the little children

With frost-bitten hands and tingling toes

Noses bright red from the cold

An innocent moment frozen

A memory fading with grown-up-ness
