Mr. Magundi says, “The difference is simple,” Mr. Magundi replied. “Knowledge is progressive, and wisdom is static. We improve in knowledge with every passing generation, and indeed with every passing day; but we have not improved in wisdom since the first man thought it might be a fine idea to eat that fruit after all. We pass our knowledge on to the next generation, by oral tradition or in writing. On the other hand, an individual can grow in wisdom,... Read more

Mister Teatime had a truly brilliant mind, but it was brilliant like a fractured mirror, all marvelous facets and rainbows but, ultimately, also something that was broken. — Terry Pratchett, Hogfather Read more

Brandon Watson has some words about Declare, by Tim Powers, a kind of supernatural spy thriller set during the cold war. He’s not as fond of it as I am, but then I’ve been a Tim Powers fan for many years. Read more

Joseph Susanka says that six of his seven sons love the Adventures of Tin Tin by Hergé (and I gather the seventh’s preferences are still unknown). I know almost nothing about Tin Tin, but given that Joseph is sound on Miyazaki I’m wondering which book to start with. (Any comments, Joseph?) Read more

The girl group Wimple emerged on the Seattle music scene in the early 1990’s with a not particularly infectious blend of pop standards, show tunes, and contemporary worship music. Although the band performed live in full habit, wimple and all, it was never clear whether or not the members were actually Catholic sisters, as they refused all interviews and never gave their personal names. They released two albums, the self-titled Wimple in 1989 and a follow-on, Roses and Thorns, in... Read more

In Jennifer Fitz’s truly excellent reflection on Pope Francis’ recent series of interviews, she said something that made me laugh—because I recognized myself in it: I’m sympathetic with those who’ve been poisoned by so much wishy-washy faithy-ism that their dissent-detectors are set to 1 part per billion. Some day I might write more about my experiences in the Episcopal Church, a landscape of lush beautiful valleys cheek-by-jowl with arid chasms spray-painted green. And yes, I’ve acquired a dissent-detector, and yes,... Read more

A friend of mine from Poland was staying with us recently, and he pointed me at this blog post which suggests that Polish is the hardest language to learn. The post includes a ranking of languages from Polish on down, and follows it with a mathematical equation to use for ranking languages. I note that the author puts English down as “easy to hard”; I can’t say anything about the author’s ability to speak English, but his prose is chockfull... Read more

My younger son is preparing for confirmation. The program this year is more involved than in past years; each month, the confirmands are required to study twenty or so questions from the Youcat—with their parents—and take an on-line quiz. Questions resulting from this steady are used to direct the next class session. It’s very cool, and we’re enjoying it quite a bit. Anyway, we were discussing question 76 (“Why did God become man in Jesus?”) about how Christ is fully... Read more
