What First Amendment rights?

What First Amendment rights?

This it the type of story that makes me yawn.  It’s the sort of thing the news media (and yes, that includes FOX) loves to do to sow divisions between anyone, and encourage resentment and focus on me or my particular movement or group.

For me?  I’m only somewhat sympathetic.  We began homeschooling for several reasons, not the least of which was the poor quality of education my boys were receiving.  It was made easier, however, when in the very year we contemplated it, my oldest were summoned to a school assembly and not too subtly told that any opinions expressed against LGBT issues would be seen as bullying and treated accordingly.  Not that we ever encouraged them to say anything or be any way other than respectful.  More or less we told them to keep their opinions to themselves unless asked.  Nonetheless, hearing the school jump the line and let us know enforcement would be swift if they did give an opinion gave us the feeling that First Amendment rights in schools weren’t what they used to be.

If that’s where schools are going, fine. But if schools are adopting that approach to enforcing standards, why can’t schools punish kids in other areas for other things?  I’m fine with it.  As long as we’re consistent.  Something these stories never strike me as trying to accomplish.
