And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with... So they’re on Christmas break. Tonight they’re having a night with the youngest that they call their ‘Bro Night.’ They were wanting to know what movie to watch. My boys, enjoying the whole Comics genre, suggested the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. I asked them for an appropriateness appraisal. They discussed it. They felt there is language that’s not appropriate for a 7 year old. Then one of them quipped, “But then, it’s nothing he hasn’t heard Trump say!” When we... Read more
Donald McClarey, at The American Catholic, has a wonderful post reminding us of one particular Christmas past. A generation of youngsters handling adversity a little differently than some of our braver, stronger youngsters today. No doubt we can find things to criticize about how they did it. Or we can invoke Dresden as good as always. But 72 years ago, it was a different Christmas. My Dad’s brother served as a medic in Patton’s army. Note, most usually declared that they... Read more
and I’ve always loved these two songs, especially when put in juxtaposition with one another. Classic Lennon/McCartney. About as good a contrast as you get since Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane. It’s also me. And, I think, the basic gist of the Faith. Nothing wrong with happiness and cheer. But let’s not forget the scary ghost stories. While the rest of the country is packing up the decorations and putting leftovers in the discount bin, for us it’s just beginning. But... Read more
We don’t watch much television. The boys like old reruns and sports. Sometimes a good movie. And of course I keep up with the news. Otherwise, there are only a couple modern shows we like. One is Chopped on the Food Network. The other is Jeopardy. We don’t always see them, but when we can, we’ll tune in. So we were watching a delightful young lady impress us for the last several days. Though I could tell she didn’t... Read more
I think of that Geico commercial that promises to save me 15% or more on car insurance. I figure the gist of the commercial is ‘we’ll save you money.’ Whether they do or not is up to others to decide. As for Trump’s motto? I suppose it means something different for different people. Probably it means things aren’t the best now, and they weren’t altogether bad then. I thought of that as I saw this again: I posted about this some... Read more
As much as her thinking that wishing she would have had an abortion will score points bothers me. Every group and movement has its extremes. I don’t expect each person in any group to condemn always and at all times everything the extremes say and do. There’s not enough time in the day. Nonetheless, when things like this come out, it’s a good chance for the movements to call out the extremes. Remember when a couple politicians declared they would banish... Read more
OK, I get it. It’s a bit heavy handed. But since there is no shortage of outlets ready to do the same to those on the Right, it’s worth pointing out there are other viewpoints that see the Left as just as ludicrous. And while sometimes those lampooned on the Right have it coming, so do those on the Left. Hat tip to Donald McClarey Read more
