So I am in love with this Flikr stream. You must go check it out. Now. So beautiful. I’m continuing to be inspired by artists around me to create white on dark images. This time it’s rocks. I got out my white conte crayon, sharpened it on a random piece of sandpaper in my ArtDeskOfDoom and went to work on my rock collection (Doesn’t everyone have one?). Mine turned into little animals (big surprise right?) An alligator, a dragonfly, a... Read more

I was completely inspired by The Book of Kells, when my kids and I watched it last night. It is a beautiful movie, thanks to Grey Catsidhe for the suggestion! So there I was, desperate to make some awesome white on dark art, scouring the house for materials. White gel pen in hand I needed something to draw on! I love my white gel pen, but I’ve found that it doesn’t always write well on all surfaces. It needs a... Read more

It’s just a quick sketch I did before going to bed. I think I want to sketch more rabbits. In various postures. We’ll see if I still want to do that in the morning. Read more

I’ve been a little busy this first week of Art Every Day Month, so I thought I’d try and catch up a little by doing two journal pages today. I’m really enjoying how much I’m learning from the process of trying to make these pages. Honestly, I’ve been pretty dissatisfied with how all of them but the last has come out, but I feel like I’m learning so much about my own style, as well as what kinds of art... Read more

So I know it’s not Thursday yet, but It’s entirely possible that I won’t have an internet connection for a couple of days (GASP!) So I thought I’d post this before I left. I’m really excited about this one, it’s super easy, cheap, and eco-friendly! By coating thinner papers in canola oil, I make them translucent so that the layer behind them shows through! First pick your papers. Thinner ones work better. Notebook paper is perfect, newspaper, origami paper, and... Read more

So it’s Art Every Day Month over at Leah’s Creative Every Day blog. I was super excited about participating this year, but so far it’s been a bit of a flop for me. My mom had to have emergency surgery which has been kind of crazy. She’s hopefully coming home tomorrow, which is wonderful, but I’m so busy right now. So here’s a little sketch I did last night, and it’s taken me until today to post. I’m not even... Read more

Today, I’m talking about one of my favorite things, carving! I love carving stamps and linoleum blocks. The process is so hands on and it’s incredibly ancient. The first stamps were made of clay in ancient Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago! There’s something so thrilling for me when I see an image I created reproduced multiple times. Making stamps I feel like I get rid of the middle man. There’s no scanners, printers, or copiers involved. Don’t get me... Read more

It rained last night, it was one of those thunderstorms where you can feel it coming in. The wind comes in from the west, bringing the low dark clouds, tossing toys around the yard. There’s an electricity in the air that I love. This morning, everything was damp and vibrant. I love how fall colors come to life under a grey sky. It seems like the sun washes out some of the best variations of brown on brown. A few... Read more
