A report from Vancouver

A report from Vancouver

Where we had dinner tonight.
We ate in the conservatory at The Teahouse. Note English Bay, in the background.

I spoke early this afternoon at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College, on “Islam, ISIS, and the Media.”  Good audience, excellent questions.

In the evening, we went to dinner with our hosts and another couple at The Teahouse in Stanley Park.  My wife ordered the Pacific Roasted Sablefish, I ordered the Fresh BC Salmon, and we shared.  Fantastic.  I really recommend this restaurant, for more than just the view.

But we didn’t order dessert there.  Instead, we went to La Casa Gelato, which bills itself as — and may well be — “The ONLY place in the WORLD with 218 Flavours on Location.”

They actually have 518 flavors — or, umm, flavours — in their repertoire, but that have room enough to put only 218 on sale at a time.  And the variety is astonishing.  I sampled such rarities as wasabi, bacon and peanut butter, and aged balsamic vinegar, but I passed on kimchee, seaweed, pineapple poppyseed, chocolate chili, and a host of others before settling on a quite conventional medley of praline with Toblerone.

A place like this would, I think, flourish among the Mormons of Utah.  They don’t smoke.  They don’t drink.  But, in my experience at least, they can really eat ice cream.
