
Colbert, of course, thinks it’s a joke, and yucks it up to the max before his fawning and uncritical audience, who’re no doubt eager to be seen as thoroughly au courant and not to be regarded as narrow-minded provincial rubes. He implicitly suggests that anybody who might regard this kind of thing as furnishing no particular cause for celebration is paranoid and perhaps sexually repressed:

I’m not quite sure, myself, that the story is all that funny.
But then, I suppose I am a narrow-minded provincial rube — to say nothing of old and white and male — and there’s always the possibility that the present generation actually is morally better than all those that have gone before it, wiser, more spiritually sensitive, and more intelligent.
