As the Wall Street Journal pointed out in an excellent editorial published on Tuesday (“The West’s Refugee Crisis”), “This is what the world looks like when the West abandons its responsibility to maintain world order. . .  the worst humanitarian catastrophe of the 21st century. . . .  The conceit has been that while all of this is tragic, the Middle East has to work out its own pathologies and what happens there will be contained there.  But by now we know that what happens in Damascus doesn’t stay in Damascus. . . .  The lesson is that while intervention has risks, so does abdication.”

And, as the Journal also points out (“Another Syria Failure”), American abdication has now apparently invited Vladimir Putin into the Middle East.

President Obama promised us “change.”

He’s kept his promise.

(Thanks to Russell Spencer for bringing the Washington Post article to my attention.)
