I just saw a personally shocking item from the United Arab Emirates:

I didn’t know Rob Bateman well.

Far from it, in fact.  I only met him following one of my lectures at Education Week this past August.  I had previously heard from his stake director of public affairs, and Rob Bateman and I spoke at some length by telephone in early September, I think.  He had some ambitious and visionary plans for his Church stewardship.

This is deeply sad news.

My prayers are with his family and with his stake.

My reflection is that we should all act, within reason, as if today might be our last day.  (Someday, of course, it will be.)  Are we doing what we should be doing?  Is there anything that we would really hate to leave undone, should we suddenly be called home?
