Contrast that definition with the famous remark in No Exit (Huis clos), by the French atheist existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980)), which, I realize can be (and has been) interpreted in various ways:
“L’enfer, c’est les autres” (“Hell is other people”)
