Sign of the times

Sign of the times August 28, 2011

Which turns out to be no sign at all.

Bracing for Irene, and expected high winds, a movie theater near our apartment removed the letters from its marquee. Not only that: for the first time in memory, the multiplex was completely shut down Saturday night. It was still closed Sunday afternoon.

Things here are more or less back to normal.  But subways and buses are still not running (and may not be running Monday, which will leave most of us stranded at home.)  Streets are pretty empty.  Rain has stopped and now it’s just windy.  At the parish, Mass attendance picked up as the day wore on, but it was still significantly less than usual.  A typical Sunday mass at my parish would have about 500 people.  We had less than half that many at the two Masses I attended.

Evidently, some neighborhoods around the city got hit pretty bad, though.  Below, the wreckage left behind from felled trees in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn.
