RIP gospel music star Edwin Hawkins, famous for ‘Oh Happy Day’

From the BBC:

The American gospel music star Edwin Hawkins has died at his home in California, at the age of 74.

The Grammy-winning singer had been suffering from pancreatic cancer, his publicist said.

Hawkins was regarded as a pioneer of urban gospel music, blending gospel hymns with secular sound. He is best-known for the 1969 hit Oh Happy Day.

The following year the Edwin Hawkins Singers backed Melanie on her top 10 hit Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).

About his signature hit:

Edwin Hawkinsโ€™ย gospel styleย arrangement of the hymn โ€œOh, Happy Dayโ€ has a long pedigree. It began as a hymn written in the mid-18th century (โ€œO happy day, that fixed my choiceโ€) by Englishย clergymanPhilip Doddridgeย (based onย Actsย 8:35) set to an earlier melody (1704) byย J. A. Freylinghausen. By the mid-19th century it had been given a new melody byย Edward F. Rimbault, who also added a chorus,ย and was commonly used forย baptismalย orย confirmationย ceremonies in the UK and USA. The 20th century saw its adaptation fromย 3/4ย toย 4/4 timeย and this new arrangement by Hawkins, which contains only the repeated Rimbault refrain, with all of the original verses being omitted.

The B-side of the single was Hawkinsโ€™ own modern arrangement of โ€œJesus, Lover of My Soulโ€ originally written byย Charles Wesleyย in 1740.

Hawkinsโ€™ arrangement quickly became a โ€œstandardโ€ and has been recorded by hundreds of artists. It was included on theย RIAASongs of the Centuryย list and won Hawkins aย Grammy Awardย forย Best Soul Gospel Performanceย in 1970 (performed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers).ย

In live performances and acoustic versions of theย Nick Caveย song โ€œDeannaโ€ (1988), portions of โ€œOh Happy Dayโ€ are included, revealing the inspiration for Caveโ€™s song.ย George Harrisonย has stated the song was a primary inspiration in the writing of his 1970 international hit single โ€œMy Sweet Lord.โ€

The song has appeared in many movies, beginning with the German filmย Seventeen and Anxiousย in 1970, but most notablyย Whoopi Goldbergโ€™sย Sister Act 2,ย with then-17-year-oldย Ryan Tobyย singing lead. The song also appears inย Big Mommaโ€™s House,ย Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,ย David LaChapelleโ€™s 2005 movieย Rize,ย Robin Williamsโ€™s 2007 movieย License to Wed.,ย and in 2010 biographical film produced byย Walt Disney Pictures:ย Secretariat.

You can hear the definitive version by the Edwin Hawkins Singers in the video below. The song never fails to make me smile. God bless him.
