If you wonder what the cardinals will be looking for when they gather in the Sistine Chapel next month, well, they’ve already narrowed their requirements. Details from CNS:  One task facing the College of Cardinals already has been completed: A job description for the Catholic Church’s chief evangelizer already is written. He must be humble, but firmly grounded in church teaching; joyful and enthusiastic; willing to listen to and dialogue with others; and courageous in defending human rights, including the... Read more

Details from the AP:  Roman Catholic-run hospitals can prescribe limited emergency contraception to rape victims, German bishops said Thursday as they sought to contain fallout from an embarrassing recent case in which two hospitals refused to treat a woman. In a statement issued at the end of a regular meeting in the western city of Trier, the German Bishops Conference said Catholic hospitals still can’t provide drugs that would lead to the death of an embryo. The German church was... Read more

We now take a break from Papal Overload for this little palate-cleanser. Little Daniel is looking forward to his Bar Mitzvah.  So much so, in fact, that he produced this frankly awesome rap video to alert family and friends and get them to Save the Date. Oy! Read more

That would be Washington’s Cardinal William Baum. His secretary for several years was Msgr. Bart Smith. The cardinal was in poor health, so Msgr. Bart accompanied him throughout the conclave (he was the last out of the Sistine Chapel before the votes took place) and he was on the balcony behind the new Pope when he was announced in St. Peter’s Square in 2005. From his parish website (not far from where I grew up in scenic Silver Spring, Maryland!),... Read more

From the New York Times:  CardinalTimothy M. Dolan, the Roman Catholic archbishop of New York, said on Tuesday that he believed it was “highly possible” that the next pope could come from a non-European country. “When I was growing up, it was presumed the pope would be an Italian,” Cardinal Dolan said, discussing next month’s conclave to elect a new pope during his live radio show, “Conversation with Cardinal Dolan,” on Sirius XM satellite radio. He said that, when Karol... Read more

Hey, you never know. I wrote about it here.    With all the O’Malley buzz being generated, Elizabeth Scalia has a great take on Pope Sean…or maybe, Pope Patrick:  For those of us who claim a connection to the auld sod, that would be a pondering just too Irish-delightful for words: In the Year of the Snake, the rise of a Pope Patrick I. Would he drive the snakes of toil and turmoil from the church, from society, from the... Read more

Just got this e-mail about some big news in Maryland: Following several months of prayerful discernment, the majority of members of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Catonsville, Maryland, have decided to enter the Catholic Church as part of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. Two other churches in the Baltimore area, Christ the King Anglican in Towson, and Mount Calvary Episcopal in Baltimore, became Catholic through the Ordinariate in 2012. Members voted on Feb. 10 whether to leave... Read more
