That and much more, from his impromptu remarks today to seminarians and novices:  Pope Francis on Saturday evening told future nuns and priests and consecrated laypeople to keep “freshness” and “joy” in their lives, as he said: “There is no sadness in holiness”. Speaking to participants in a four-day international event for Seminarians, Novices and those on a vocational journey, Francis gave an off-the-cuff lecture to seminarians and novices from across the globe, gathered in the Paul VI Hall. [Click here for readings.] If you’re still feeling drowsy this Sunday morning, here’s something to wake you up. Last year, the world got a lot richer. According to the World Wealth Report, released just two weeks ago, the combined wealth of the world’s richest people climbed 10 percent … to a grand total of 46.2 trillion dollars. According to the report, the “super rich,” with assets exceeding $30 million, number just over 111,000 people. I’d just like to say: if... Read more

Details: A Coptic Christian priest in Egypt’s Northern Sinai has been shot dead, in what could be the first sectarian attack since the military overthrow of Islamist Mohammed Morsi. The priest, Mina Aboud Sharween, was attacked in the early afternoon while walking in the Masaeed area in El Arish. The shooting in the coastal city was one of several attacks believed to be by Islamist insurgents that included firing at four military checkpoints in the region, the sources said. From today’s homily:  In his Mass on Saturday morning at the Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis said being Christian “does not mean doing things, but allowing oneself to be renewed by the Holy Spirit.” The Pope emphasised that even in the life of the Church there are “ancient structures” to be renewed without fear. “New wine in new wineskins.” In his homily, Pope Francis dwelt on the renewal that Jesus brings. “The doctrine of the law,” he noted, “is enriched,... Read more

From the Washington Post:  An 8-month-old boy died Friday after he was apparently left in his mother’s car while she was at work, Alexandria police said. The exact cause of the child’s death was not immediately known, but the temperature reached 90 degrees at Reagan National Airport. Typically, temperatures inside cars with closed windows rise well above the outdoor temperature. Alexandria police said they were called to Inova Alexandria Hospital after an unresponsive child was brought there just after 4... Read more

Hours after this story broke, about the head of the CDF’s remarks on women deacons, the item below popped up in my Google newsfeed. I think it opens a window to a part of the Christian world many of us in the Latin church don’t know about. The story recounts a talk given last month in Illinois by the historian Knarik O. Meneshian, who gave some of the background behind women deacons in the Armenian Apostolic Church: “Women deacons, an ordained... Read more

Who knew? Details:  If you follow the boisterous groups of cross bearers and prayer-humming nuns who weave through the narrow streets of Jerusalem’s Old City, you’ll eventually end up in a rare clearing that holds one of Christianity’s holiest buildings: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Orthodox and Catholic Christians consider the complex to be built on the site of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the ancient structure is like no church you’ve ever seen: a... Read more

The Vatican’s newspaper thinks so: The Vatican daily L’Osservatore Romano on Friday devoted a full page looking at the Catholic identity of popular comic book superheroes while questioning the religious affiliation of some of the most popular like Superman and Batman. The story was published as the latest Superman film Man of Steel this week took more than $250 million (£170 million) at the US box office and its phenomenal success has been linked to spiritual themes promoted by Grace... Read more
