Taking a Sabbath is increasingly optional. I’m old enough to remember when all the stores were closed on Sundays, and you couldn’t buy alcohol until noon. Good Christians were supposed to be in church!

Now there’s no stigma for avoiding church, and Sunday is a day for sports, if anything. Even kids’ games are scheduled on Sunday mornings.  Jews and  Muslims, at least in the United States, have a panoply of conflicts with their Sabbath on Friday nights and Saturdays.

Sports is relaxing enough, I suppose, but it misses the point of a true Sabbath. Which is, to set aside time strictly for spiritual contemplation and connection.
