At age 54, I had never experienced a moose sighting! I’ve driven Canadian highways scanning for moose. I drove up and down the northeastern parts United States, hoping to catch a glimpse in Maine, even stopping for dinner one and overhearing tales of travelers who’d just seen moose on the road. I lived in Utah and scoured mountainous canyons for one moose sighting. It never happened.
Contrast my fruitless searching to my brother-in-law, who saw moose, it seemed, every time he explored the mountains, except when I was with him looking for moose.
I don’t know why I wanted to see a moose so earnestly. Their quirky, giant frames inspired me to keep looking. I went to the right places, but at the wrong times.
There are no moose where we lived in Hawaii or on the plains of Texas, and I shelved my hope to see a moose.
Moose Sighting in Cottonwood Canyon
I made a trip to Utah to spend time with family, work, and see General Conference in person. My sister Desiree and that moose-lucky brother-in-law Kurt took me, my mom, sister Destinne and her two girls, up Cottonwood Canyon to Willow Lake. When mom and I pulled into their driveway, my Desiree said that Kurt noticed moose-sighting comments on AllTrails from earlier that morning. People had seen five moose!
I couldn’t imagine that the moose would stick around until we got to the trail, but I excitedly considered a potential moose sighting.
While driving up the canyon, Kurt noticed a moose on the mountainside! He is a moose-whisperer. He flipped the truck around and parked on the side of the road so I could see the moose. And I did!
Victory!

How did Kurt see that tiny black speck? He knew what to look for. I had been staring out the window at the incredible mountain walls on the other side of the road.
Moose on the trail
As we hiked the path, we passed so many hikers saying moose were on the trail. Would they really still be there?
Yes! We saw a cow protecting two calves in a thicket. An hour later, we came across a bull and cow standing incognito off the trail.

I saw moose! And they were just as awesome and quirky and mysterious as I imagined.
Hearing the Word of the Lord at General Conference
The day after my moose sighting, I loaded myself onto a train and made my way to the Conference Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. I had tickets to attend two sessions of General Conference in person.
I wanted to hear the word of the Lord through His servants, and I knew where to find them. Like Kurt’s multiple moose experiences, I have experienced finding and hearing His servants.
I sought them and found them!
Victory!

These simple experiences reinforced how important it is to know what I’m seeking and to be in the right place at the right time to find it.
Victory!
