All those roadside vendors of chhole bhature, boiled eggs, omelette, samosas, kakri, shakarkandi (sweet potato), corn etc.. well you will no longer be able to enjoy all that in Delhi! The special "sweat" flavor – as we Delhi-ites jokingly describe the food from the roadside vendors – is gone out of our lives!
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has accepted in its totality the suggestion of the Supreme Court to ban cooking on the roadside, putting a question mark on whether Delhiites will continue to enjoy the samosas, tikkis, chole bhature and a host of other fresh food sold by hawkers all over the city.
Submitting its new scheme on urban street-vending to the apex court, MCD through its standing counsel Sanjeev Sen, said, "Cooking of any food item shall not be permitted at all, but food properly packed may be sold by those allotted a hawking site." This would include a ban on sale of cut fruits or the like as the apex court had termed them unhygienic. "Preparation of any unhygienic goods spreading infectious diseases, hazardous electronic goods and polluting items shall not be allowed to be sold by hawkers," the civic body said.
