As a Bull Moose Republican, I am without a party at present. Sadly, the Democratic Party seems intent on not trying for my vote, my wife’s vote, or numerous other “gettable” folk. Manchin of West Virginia beats the red tide in his state. He is not on any shortlist for Vice President. John Edwards of Louisiana beats Trump at his own game and wins in Red Louisiana? He is ignored. The large number of Democrats that are ambivalent about abortion?... Read more

A writer like Dorothy Sayers presents problems for a program exploring great works of art. Sayers was an outstanding writer, but she never produced a Hamlet or Pride and Prejudice. Her scholarship, even on Dante, is clever, but not state of the art (my Dante scholar friends claim). Yet I would claim that Dorothy Sayers, like CS Lewis or Langston Hughes, can be read in a great texts program. The sum of the genius, the person behind the prose and poetry, is greater than any individual... Read more

What is going on?  If we wish to follow the Logos where He leads, we need to listen to critics, especially those with interesting things to say. Jeff Williams is a critic of metaphysics. A University of Chicago grad, he agreed to present his argument and I have posted it here unedited (except for some formatting and the title). As result of his rejection of metaphysics, he rejects objective moral law as an illusion. Mr. Williams previously argued that Athens has... Read more

When you know bright people, sometimes they say things so well, you know other people should hear what they think. Today I get to share something from one such new voice. Jack Franicevich is a graduate of Biola University and the Torrey Honors Institute. He lives in Phoenix, where he is teaching 9th grade and preparing for ordination in the ACNA. Mr. Franicevich: I teach humanities at a Title I charter in Phoenix called Maryvale Preparatory Academy. We are a... Read more

Bearing the Cross This is a history of the Southern Christian Christian Leadership Conference and of Martin Luther King Jr. It is unsparing, carefully documented, and full of ugly prose. This is not a well written book, but an important book as one of the few accounts of Reverend King that is not hagiography and that tells his whole story. The book tells all the truth that the author knows. He obviously admires his subject while being disturbed by flaws he... Read more

Whither and Whence? Some mistakes are so easy to make, it is hard to see that they are mistakes. I thought it was easier to know where I had been than where I was going. Isn’t that obvious? After all, we have been in the past and we haven’t been in the future. The future seems like a great mystery, while the past seems stale. Day-old bread is cheap and so is day-old experience for most of us. The key... Read more

Seven days of listening to anointed preaching is good for the soul. Martin Luther King was a pastor before he was famous and he pastored at the height of his fame. The civil war that raged within him found hope and some peace in the resilient faith of the African-American church. His fight against external evils, social and political, constantly was guided by the faith of his father and mother, a faith he made his own during the Memphis bus boycott.... Read more
