Just because you can’t drink
all that falls
doesn’t mean you give up
taking sips
of rainwater.
If the nut of the mystery
can’t be held,
at least let me touch
the shell.
~ Jalal id-din Rumi

My teacher and guide, Shaykh Muhammad al-Jamal,
used to say in his broken English,
“Not eat the apple in one bite!”
Once we get a taste of the sweetness,
we can’t help but want more.
We thirst for the knowing
of the Ocean of Truth,
of What is Real,
and the Wisdom sends us drops –
only what we can take in
without drowning,
and still at times
the thirst is temporarily quenched.
Even the sprinklings are enough
for us to lose ourselves
in the Essence of the One.
