Celebrating Advent with a Young Family

Celebrating Advent with a Young Family December 18, 2011

We’ve come to the beginning of the fourth week of Advent. We’ve been celebrating it with our two 4-year old twins, Zion and Mary. This week we hit about 4 of the 7 days, not too bad. The script for our Advent devotion is pretty simple: light the candles, read and talk about a Bible verse, sing a Christmas carol,  say the “O Gracious Light” hymn, blow out the candles. It’s always a bustle of activity figuring out whose going to light and blow out which candle and whose going to sit on daddy’s or mommy’s lap.

We’ve lit the candle of Promise (wk 1) and Light (wk 2). This week our focus was on the candle of “Love”. We talked about Jesus’ command to love our enemies. That was an interesting discussion because Zion ended up enjoying figuring out who his enemies were – not exactly the point. Perhaps naming enemies should have waited for next year. We talked about God’s love everyone and how it was our job to share God’s love with everyone. We thought about ways we could show God’s love to people who were in need.

The funniest moment this week during our Advent devotion was something Zion (typical) did, although he was not trying to be funny. It was in fact one of those precious moments that is funny. We were singing “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and we were probably just a couple of lines in when Zion puts his hands up and says “Pause”! We didn’t hear what he said at first so he said it again “Pause, Please!” We stopped singing and asked him what he needed. He said he needed to yawn so could be pause the song. Karla and I just about rolled out of our seats. He didn’t want to miss singing any of the song so he asked if we could cause the song! So precious, so funny!

We enter our last week of Advent. We have only the rose candle and the big fat white one to light. This is a big week. Jesus is coming! Get ready.
