The Dogwood Tree

The Dogwood Tree

Pink Dogwood

THE DOGWOOD TREE

Jesus died on a dogwood tree

He hung his head and died

There were no blooms on that sad day

Though Lord knows that tree tried

But only three days passed

Before the Son arose,

And celebrating that event

Blood red blossoms rows on rows

Perhaps you’ve noticed the blossoms’ shape

The same as that holy cross

Death transformed by resurrection

Beauty without loss

There are parables in these trees

If only we have eyes to see

The Almighty left us many hints

How life can truly be

God’s yes to life

Is louder than death’s no

In Spring new life among the trees

Reminds us it is so.

So do not dwell on dormancy

Or seasons now gone by

Learn lessons from the harbingers

That reach upward to the sky.

They teach us ‘always reach up’

To the one who rose on high

Who gives us something everlasting

Even before we die.

There is no final victory

Of death or of the grave

Because Jesus overcame them both

When he came to save.

So celebrate his victory

For it is ours as well

Red cross-shaped blossoms

Remind us….

Of the story we must tell.
